Galaxy phone or tablet Wi-Fi connection issues

Sometimes Wi-Fi problems are caused by simple network issues. Other times, you may need to take additional steps on your phone or tablet to ensure your Wi-Fi connection is stable, such as re-adding the connection or assigning a static IP address.

If you encounter issues connecting to Wi-Fi during the initial setup, you can skip the Wi-Fi setup, then manually set the date and time for your location. After the setup, navigate to the device's Settings to connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Check the device.

Remove any third-party cases or accessories. Move the device to an area that doesn't have any sources of interference (such as microwaves). It can even help if you change your hand position, or which hand is holding the device.

Reboot the mobile device.

On a phone or tablet with a Power button:
 

  • Press and hold the Power button. Tap Power off, and then tap Power off again to confirm. Wait 30 seconds for your device to completely power off. Press and hold the Power button to power on the device.

 

On devices without a Power button:
 

  • Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to open the Quick settings panel. Tap the Power icon, and then tap Restart. Tap Restart again.

Confirm that Wi-Fi is turned on.

Open Settings, tap Connections, and then tap Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is on, your mobile device will list the Wi-Fi networks in range. Tap the switch to turn on Wi-Fi if necessary.
 

  • If your Wi-Fi network appears, select your network. If the network is secured, enter the credentials, and then tap Connect.
  • If your Wi-Fi network does not appear, or no networks appear at all, verify the settings on your Access Point or Router.
    • Reset your AP or Router. If it doesn't have a power switch, remove the power cable for 30 seconds.
    • Make sure the AP or Router is transmitting the network SSID, or manually add a network if it does not broadcast your network SSID.

Reconnect to the network.

Try connecting to the network again to check if it works. It may be necessary to manually add the network if it is hidden, or requires special settings.
 

  1. Navigate to and open Settings. Tap Connections, and then tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Swipe to the bottom of the list and tap Add network.
  3. Enter the Network name (SSID).
  4. Tap Security. Select the encryption type for the network you are adding.
  5. If you choose an option other than None, tap the Password field, and enter the credentials.
  6. Tap Save.

Important
If you want to use public Wi-Fi, you may need to agree to their Terms and Conditions of Use before you are granted access. Open your Internet browser; if public Wi-Fi is available, a pop-up should appear. Agree to the Terms and Conditions. If a password is required, you will need to enter it.

Make sure you have the correct password.

Make sure you have the correct password for the network. With some older security types an incorrect password will make it appear as though you are connected but will not provide any access.

Disconnect and then reconnect from the network.

If this happens, you should disconnect and then reconnect from the network. Navigate to and open Settings, and then tap Connections. Tap Wi-Fi, and then tap the Settings icon next to your desired network. Tap Forget, and then try reconnecting to the network.

Restart the router and your devices.

Restarting your router and devices can help fix simple connection errors.

Contact your Service Provider.

If you are unable to access the internet after you have rebooted the Wi-Fi router, please contact your Internet Service Provider for further troubleshooting.

Find your device's IP address.

Navigate to and open Settings. Tap About phone or About tablet, and then tap Status information. The IP address will be listed as a set of four numbers under IP address.

Use a Windows PC to find your network information.

The easiest way to retrieve this information about the Gateway address, etc. is using a PC already connected to the AP/Router.

 

Select Start, type “CMD” into the search bar, and then press Enter. Type "ipconfig /all" into the black box, and then press Enter. The IP address, gateway, and DNS settings will be displayed. Please write down all of these numbers because they will be needed when you configure the IP settings on your device.

Important
You will not be able to use the same IP address that is assigned to the PC. Change the last number of the IP address to something that is not already in use. Many routers leave 200 – 250 unassigned for this purpose.

Assign a static IP address to the device.

  1. On your phone or tablet, navigate to and open Settings. Tap Connections, and then tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the network you want to connect to. If the network has already been configured, tap the Settings icon next to the network.
  3. If needed, enter the network password. Then, tap View more.
  4. Tap IP settings, and then tap Static.
  5. Tap IP address and enter the new IP address. Make sure the last number in the address is unique.
  6. Tap Gateway and enter the Gateway address from your PC.

Enter the network prefix length.

Tap Network prefix length and then enter the appropriate information. The most common IP ranges on home wireless routers are as follows:
 

  • If the IP address starts with 192.168, enter 24.
  • If the IP address starts with 10.0, enter 8.
  • If the IP address starts with 172.16, enter 12.

 

Tap DNS1, and then enter the Preferred DNS you want the device to use. Tap DNS2, enter the Alternate DNS you want the device to use, and then tap Connect or Save.

 

If Save is grayed out, the information you entered has an error, and you should double check your entries.

Open the network settings.

Navigate to and open Settings, tap General management, and then tap Reset.

Reset the network settings.

  • For issues with your mobile connection, tap Reset mobile network settings.
  • For issues with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, tap Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings.

Next, tap Reset settings. You may be prompted to enter your security credentials. Tap Reset to confirm.

Warning
You may need your Samsung account password or Lock screen password when resetting your phone or tablet. All your data will be erased. However, before resetting your device, you can use Smart Switch or a cloud account to back up your data onto an SD card or USB drive. If you have encrypted your SD card, it must be decrypted before resetting your device.
Note
Performing the steps in this guide can resolve issues with your Galaxy phone or tablet by restoring the device to its original settings. However, if the problem is caused by an app that will be fixed in a future update, a factory data reset isn't a permanent solution. You'll need to reinstall or update the app once the update is available to take advantage of the fix.

Prepare your phone or tablet for reset.

  • Make sure to back up your phone or tablet. All data and settings will be erased.

  • Write down the username and password for the account that you used to back up your data.

  • We recommend having your phone or tablet plugged into the wall charger during the reset process because it may take up to an hour.

  • If you have encrypted the SD Card inserted in to your phone or tablet, make sure to decrypt it before the reset. Navigate to Settings, search for and select SD, and then tap Decrypt SD card.

Perform the reset.

Navigate to Settings. Search for and select Factory data reset. Tap Factory data reset again, and then tap Reset. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the reset. You may need to enter your Samsung account password or Lock screen password. The phone or tablet will reboot.

Set up the device.

When the phone or tablet reboots, it will have its original factory settings. Now you will need to go through the initial setup to finish setting up the phone or tablet. The phone may require you to enter your Samsung or Google account information to complete the setup.

Test the device.

Before installing any apps, make sure that your phone or tablet is functioning normally.

If you are still encountering any issues, please visit a Samsung walk-in service center or you can schedule a repair service online.

If you are still experiencing network service issues with calling, SMS or MMS messages, network signals, mobile data, or hotspots after resetting the device, you may need to contact your carrier.
